Activities
Conservation

First impressions count, and at Zimbali the overwhelming vista is natural beauty, ecological richness and biological diversity. The luxuriance of this reserve is reflected in its eight different vegetation types ranging from pioneer dune grass through to towering dune forest. All this provides a secure home to no fewer than eight mammals and 220 bird species as well as countless butterflies and insects – all of which are vital to the sustainability of this sensitive ecosystem.

Being one of the last remaining areas of natural coastal forest in South Africa a strict conservation policy was implemented to harness the heritage of this area. This has paid dividends. Zimbali has acted as a conservancy for the re-establishment of many threatened indigenous species. This gradual recovery and rehabilitation of the forest flora is also envisaged for the recently launched new residential section phase because this development has a long view in mind – that of a heritage to be passed on to successive generations.

Ongoing conservation, in consultation with conservation experts, includes: ensuring that the natural water supplies, dams and wetlands are protected the preservation and management of wildlife the controlled removal of alien vegetation and ensuring that all landscaping, including the residential areas is in accordance with the prescribed indigenous plant types.

Zimbali Coastal Resort – A unique sanctuary to be lived in

Security

Security is one of Zimbali’s most important aspects. There are no unsightly security gates enclosing homes, no intrusive walling, no ubiquitous neighbourhood6 watch signs and no watchdogs to assault the silence or hound the joggers with their frantic barking. Instead both the Coastal Forest and Golf Estate are monitored by the most advanced systems available. Security walling and fencing encloses the entire domain and access is via two security entrances manned 24 hours a day, through which all vehicle access is controlled. There are also monitored turnstiles so residents and hotel guests have secure access to the unspoilt beach areas.

Golf

Security is one of Zimbali’s most important aspects. There are Offering irresistible ocean and forest views, exceptional water and wetland features and an inspiring natural setting, Zimbali Country Club has developed the reputation of a memorable course with charisma and challenge. With the brief of “conservation takes precedence” international golf course designer and former British and South African PGA champion, Tom Weiskopf, had to integrate a “cart only” course into a property with dramatic elevation changes, varying eco-systems and substantial residential sections. This was no easy task, but the end result is a prestigious course that is ecologically sound, yet it maximizes the natural landscape. Having been described as “an enthralling journey through 18 holes”, the changing terrain stretches the skill yet captivates its participating golfers. With the Weiskopf philosophy of “presenting a fair challenge to any level of play” the essence of this course is that it will reward the good shot and punish the bad.
